What size feeder do you need for 10 chickens?
An adult hen eats around 120g of feed per day, so a flock of 10 will go through about 1.2kg daily. Choosing a feeder that’s 3L or larger means fewer refills and less daily checking. In general, the larger the feeder, the longer you can go between top-ups.
Is a plastic or metal feeder better for chickens?
Both have their advantages. Plastic feeders are lightweight, affordable, easy to clean, and won’t rust. Metal feeders, on the other hand, are extremely durable and can last for many years, provided they’re kept dry and don’t rust.
Is it better to feed chickens on the ground or in a feeder?
It’s best to provide chickens’ daily feed in a feeder. Feeding on the ground leads to wasted food, attracts rodents and can become contaminated with faeces. Small amounts of treats can be scattered occasionally to encourage natural foraging behaviour, but regular meals are best kept in a feeder.
